Resort amenities at Staten Island’s Great Kills Harbor don’t require elaborate travel preparations
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Great Kills Harbor, at about the midpoint of Staten Island’s Atlantic-facing shoreline, isn’t popularly known as a bight, but it is one.
Geographically, a bight is a generally U-shaped bend in a coastline, forming a bay or cove.
Alternatively, a mate on a boat might describe a bight as the loose middle part of a line where it loops back on itself. If the rope were draped over a hook, the bight would be the curved portion sitting on the hook.
There’s no need to load up on nautical lore, however, to enjoy what Great Kills Harbor has to offer.
Its main thoroughfare is Mansion Avenue, a relatively short street conducive to walking and enjoying the maritime neighborhood.
Up and down this stretch are facilities for small craft. These include berths, storage, fishing tackle and bait, and marine supplies.
In its midst is the Mansion Grand, featuring Alissia’s Cafe. From its windows facing the Harbor, take in views of boats and life at the bight.
When it comes to rewards, a full-course prix-fixe dinner for $19.95 is hugely popular. Seafood? Of course! Steaks and chops are part of the mix, as are several classical Italian favorites.
It’s perfectly OK to congratulate yourself on discovering this pleasantly scenic part of Staten Island and the restaurant that is a centerpiece.
